Plain Sight Answers

A-Wise-Woman-Builds-Her-Home

Sometimes the best answers are hiding in plain sight.

It had been one of those days where irritations piled up like derailed train cars. When finally the children were asleep in their beds and exhaustion oozed from my every pore, I collapsed in front of the computer. To be consumed with distractions and just to relax. Jeff's farming hours are long and this was one of those times I had just "had it."

I saw a friend was online and we began chatting back and forth through instant messaging. Her words always encourage me, her home filed with many children and a husband who works evenings too. I knew she would understand, so I began unloading my day's irritations.

Something annoying happened. [Enter]

And something worse. [Enter]

And then it was something else. [Enter]

You wouldn't believe this, but it was even worse. [Enter]

It was one thing after another and I lost it. [Enter]

I acted like I said I wouldn't. [Enter]

I failed so badly today. I feel so defeated. [Enter]

This day just sucked. [Enter]

And silence from the other end of the chat. My words stared back at me and my mind raced. Why was this day so horrible? Yesterday wasn't any better. There wasn't much hope.

Finally a popping sound signaled my friend's reply.

Have you been reading your Bible? She asked.

Insensitive? Preachy? Holy-er than thou? I wanted to cling to those feelings as I read her question again. But I knew the answer. No, I had not been reading my Bible. My rushed prayers (if any) led to unpleasant, impulsive actions and it all ended in a day that "just sucked."

No, I haven't had time, I replied.

You can't do this job on your own. Let God feed your soul. When you read your Bible every day, you have strength to act in obedience, she said.

As I was thinking, "I know all this... I just haven't done it," her next sentence arrived saying, "You know it is true. We all just need reminders sometimes."

Part of me still longed to hear "Oh, that's okay. Life is out to get you... you poor dear," but I needed that kick in the seat of my pants. I left the chat to go find my Bible.

Ironically (or maybe not), my Bible was sitting on the hutch in the dining room and a fruit basket sat on top. One lone pear in the basket had rotted and left stinky juice to run through the basket and on to the leather cover of my Bible.

How long does it take fruit to rot? Maybe about as long as it takes my weary soul to realize I can't do this on my own.

The difficulties of this life are inescapable, but God provides the answer.... in plain sight.

"In this world you will have trouble.

But take heart! I have overcome the world."

[John 16:33]

My pastor is preaching through the book of Mark and a verse leapt off the page while I read the passage during the sermon. ..."The whole crowd was amazed at his teaching" (Mark 11:28). This isn't talking about awe-inspiring miracles. Just "teaching." Yet, the people were AMAZED by the simple truths they heard from Jesus. The pastor expounded on that verse by saying, "Open your Bibles and read. God has amazing things to show you. When you are reading and seeking, you will be encouraged."

You. Will. Be. Encouraged.

We serve a God who has all the power. His strength is perfect, when ours is gone (II Cor. 12:9). But we can't just wear around power-ranger suits and expect no effort on our parts. This "easy" answer will take some work (I had to clean rotten pear juice off my Bible first). Open the pages. We need to learn and practice by reading the Bible and we will be encouraged. And as my friend said, we'll have the strength to act in obedience when those sucky days come.

Busyness makes me crazy!

Busyness is a life full of things that may sound important, but make a normal women feel crazy. The beautifully photoshopped women in the magazines say “you can do it all, plus a little more, while looking fantastic (your children will look fantastic too!)”. This isn’t reality.

I often need a reminder that I’m not super woman – usually I’ve just fallen on my butt when it comes to mind.

I feel so important when I am busy. A friend asks, “How are you?,” and responding “I’m SO busy,” elevates my status. We get things done, we pack our days with amazing things. La, ti, da....

No matter how frenzied it makes my family. Or that my health suffers. Or that I haven’t crossed “daily devotions” off my list all week. Or that I forgot to tell my husband about something going that needed his input. Or that my kids are acting terrible because I don’t have time for them. Or that my house is messy and dirty.

I rush and rush and ignore all the big little things because I have a list that NEEDS to be completed. I committed to others and said, “yes” to all this. Now it is too much and I’m feeling completely over-extended. Sound familiar?

How appropriate that I am dealing with this right now. My heart beats faster as all those “busy” things are swirling around in my head giving me no peace. I woke up early this morning without the alarm clock because my brain wouldn’t rest. And then one more thing popped into my head. Drops. Great, I need to think of something to write about Monday morning to “help busy moms discover abundant life through Jesus Christ.” No pressure there. I cried out to God, “HELP! What in the world can I write about? I’m too busy to even think.”

Well, there is your topic.

Where do I go from here? I’m already too busy. Maybe you are reading this and you don’t even have time to finish because that to-do list is a mile long. There has to be a way out of this mess…

  • It isn’t just me that my actions effect. I feel strongly that I need to apologize to God and my family for letting us get so busy. My children get dragged from here to there regardless of their sleep, food, and attention needs. And the man of the family hears my insane schedule and shakes his head knowing this will end badly and knowing there is no time for him. The main Man, the God Almighty, also knows there is no room left for Him. The “abundant” life he talks about isn’t filled with a mile-long to-do list.

  • I can cancel a few things. There are probably a couple things that are skipable in the busy schedule. If it isn't life or death, definitely cross it off the list. I'm alive to tell you that missing library storytime did not effect world peace or no children were the wiser.

  • Pray for strength. There are so many things on my list that are really important and I can’t cancel! Too many people depend on me, I’ve already paid money for it (such a great excuse!), this is a “once in a life-time” opportunity…. the reasons go on and on. Truly, there are instances when we need to just get it done and God can help! “I’m sorry Lord for taking on too much, please see me through this with grace, confidence, and health.”

  • Don’t do it again! I know what I am capable of and what is a sane pace for my young family. I know when I say “yes” to too much and when all those responsibilities make everyone crazy. I get this feeling in the pit of my stomach, “I really shouldn’t agree to this,” (well hello Holy Spirit, long time no see). We know our limitations, yet ignore them over and over again. Maybe for the sake of feeling importantly busy or maybe because NOT being busy is too scary. We need to be reasonable with our time.

I will make better choices in the future. I will remember my priorities (God, husband, children…. then everything else). I will let the busy stuff go! I will make my life and the lives of each member of my family so much more pleasant. When those pseudo super women tell us to do more, we can remember this verse: “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” (Romans 12:2). And the things that are “good, acceptable, and perfect” never make anyone (or her family) crazy busy.

“Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him, and he will act.”

(Psalm 37:5)

Motherhood is.

"My mother had a great deal of trouble with me, but I think he enjoyed it."

~Mark Twain

When you are a mother, you are never really alone in your thoughts.  A mother always has to think twice, once for herself and once for her child.

~Sophia Loren

If evolution really works, how come mothers only have two hands?

~Milton Berle

The formative period for building character for eternity is in the nursery. The mother is queen of that realm and sways a scepter more potent than that of kings or priests.

~Author Unknown

Any mother could perform the jobs of several air traffic controllers with ease.

~Lisa Alther

"Children seldom misquote you. They more often repeat word for word what you should not have said."

 ~Mae Maloo

It's not easy being a mother.  If it were easy, fathers would do it.

~From the television show The Golden Girls

There came a moment quite suddenly a mother realized that a child was no longer hers. ... without bothering to ask or even give notice, her daughter had just grown up.

-Alice Hoffman

It's the three pairs of eyes that mothers have to have...One pair that see through closed doors. Another in the back of her head...and, of course, the ones in front that can look at a child when he goofs up and reflect 'I understand and I love you' without so much as uttering a word.

-Erma Bombeck

Her dignity consists in being unknown to the world; her glory is in the esteem of her husband; her pleasures in the happiness of her family.

* These photos (except for the ones of just the girls) were taken by my friend Jenni. I was doing a session for her and mentioned I wish I had just one good picture of myself. She said she would love to give it a try. I fixed the settings on my camera and we switched places. We got in a lot of laughs as she played photographer. Then, we pulled the kids in and I believe these are priceless pictures I will smile at for the rest of my life.

1980 was a great year.

It was my birthday last week. Birthdays always cause me to reflect, but this one especially because I turned the big 3-0. This birthday finds me as a woman growing in my faith with an amazing God, married to a handsome, hardworking guy, mommy to 3 (an almost 6 year old, a 3 year old, and an almost 1 year old), blogger, canner, writer for Drops, MHO (manager of household operations), gardener, crafter, friend, neighbor, and singer in the band (worship band).

Life's full and life is good!

A decade ago, life was so different. I had just worked the summer in southern California as a lifeguard, quit college, broke up with my boyfriend of almost a year, took a solo road trip to the middle of Canada, was in a dear friend's wedding, came home to live with my parents, swore off dating for a whole year because I was tired of the drama, got a job at a tux shop and was planning a trip with my friend Janelle to Europe.

A decade before that I turned 10. (How do you like my math abilities? I don't think I've actually learned a lot more math concepts in the last 20 years). I don't remember a whole lot about my 10th year. I was in fourth grade, I was homeschooled, lived in a tiny house (740 sq. feet), shared a pink room with my sister who had decided Barbies weren't cool, wore a lot of scrunchies in my permed and still naturally blond hair, took piano lessons, liked to sew entire outfits for myself -- crafting was my life.

A decade before that I was a newborn (see, there are my math skills again). I was born on my own terms, 3 days before my mom's scheduled c-section. My mom always said it was the start of doing things my way! The year was 1980.

The president of the United States was Jimmy Carter.

The average income was $17,700.

A first class stamp was 17 cents.

A gallon of milk was $2.19.

A VCR machine was $700.

Mt. St. Helens erupted (pretty sure there was no correlation between my birth and the eruption).

Post-It Notes were invented.

Cabbage Patch Dolls were the poplular new toy.

Mini skirts, riped jeans and sweatshirts, bright colors, big hair, and leg warmers were fashion trends.

Mullets or mohawks were sported by everyone who was cool.

Naturally I wanted to celebrate this amazing year with a 1980's themed birthday party. I made some colorful invitations to set the theme and invited family and a few close friends who love me enough to wear costumes, side ponies, spiked mohawks, and blue eye liner.  Other prep involved making food to feed everyone, procuring a projector (from Jeff's mom's work) to show "Back to the Future," making a 12' x 12' big screen for the movie, and praying for some beautiful Fall weather (it was perfect!).

Please notice Jenni's scrunchy, crimped side pony, plastic-y jacket with shoulder pads, striped t-shirt dress with tule skirt, ruffle belt, purple leggings, teal socks, and white tennies.

Classic.

Perfection.

My parents picked up the cake and had "Sunny" printed on it since that was my childhood nickname. Ah, remember when rainbows were a good thing? Life was simple, sweet, and brightly colored. I miss those days.

I also miss leg warmers because there are so many times my ankles are chilled but not my feet or the rest of my legs.

I have totally rad friends to dress so fashionably for my party.
A cropped sweatshirt and short cut-off shorts... I have no words.
Little Clara was even wearing a vintage 80's dress and beads.

I gave these two the award for "best dressed" because they found their outfits in their very own closets. That takes some skill. Kelly's purple sweatshirt had kitten on the front -- I would have been envious of that in the 80s.

Jayne went with the 1980's suburban mom look with an Oxford shirt and pearls and side braid. One universal trend in the 80's worn by all was the over-the-top make-up. Hot pink lipstick, too much blush, and blue eye make-up.

My brother-in-law, Paul wore eye liner for the party. I was touched by his thoughfulness.

My sister's outfit was classic. Where do you even find stirrup pants these days? Goodwill in NE Salem apparently. The black wool coat with leather insets and should pads the size of Texas was a nice addition over her rayon-print blouse, tied at the waist.

A blue mohawk to match dad's.

The girls were happy to cooperate with the theme. Blue hair? Sure mom.

Nearly everyone dressed up, with the non-costume-wearers feeling like the weird ones.

I had so much fun and appreciate everyone's efforts.

At dark, everyone settled down to watch "Back To the Future" (way more swearing in it than I remembered. Eek). The night was perfect with the projector and sound system that Jeff moved outside. He also built the huge screen. Nothing says "love" like a guy setting up his sound system outdoors... and wearing a costume for his wife's 80's party.

And I certainly felt the love! 30 (and beyond) is going to be a great year.

Dear Mom, it's my birthday.

Dear Mom,

On my daughter’s birthday, I stopped on the way to our little-girl-festivities to buy myself a gift. The day was all about her, yet I treated myself because I think of her birthday as partly my day too. No one got me a present or said, “Nice work on the child you bore and are raising.” But I was there. I fell in love with a precious child and became a mother to her on that day. I put in the hours and the emotion. It’s a special day for her... and for me.

So, I bought myself a coffee.

Today is my birthday. But I didn’t have to tell you that Mom. I’m sure the memories swirl around you, some vivid and some vague of a day 30 years ago. You became my mother, my life support. You remember because you were there. I wanted to take this opportunity to thank you.

Thank you for carrying me in your body, for being uncomfortable, for going pee often and sleeping little, getting misshapen and then getting cut open so I could be born.

Thank you for adoring me when I was a 25 pound 6 month old with patchy hair and bad baby acne.

Thank you for the sacrifices you made so you could stay home and raise me.

Thank you for doing without so that I was never in need of anything.

Thank you for putting in the time to discipline me…. I never doubted your love.

Thank you for not selling me on the street corner during the difficult 2 year old years… and beyond. (Years 13-19 could be added to here as well).

Thank you for teaching me at home. Even when I didn’t like it, I appreciate the education you gave me. You taught me how to reason. And best of all, you passed on your love of reading and writing to me.

Thank you for allowing me to spread my wings. You always encouraged my independence. I hope I am as understanding, patient, and wise with my own children if one of them someday wants to tour Europe instead of finishing college.

Thank you for teaching me the value of hard work. You and dad modeled it yourself and encouraged, prodded, and made me work. I am thankful you did.

Thank you for praying for me when you didn’t know what else to do. The godly heritage you gave to me is priceless.

Thank you for being my mom.

Truth or Lie. Part II.

Mandy thinks she is 7 years old.
True. Do not try to convince her that she is actually 3. It gets ugly.

I bought acid washed, peg-legged jeans.
There is an 80s party coming up and I bought the pants as part of my costume.
I'm apprehensive to wear them,
but my husband has convinced me that I look foxy in them.
Pictures may or may not follow of me actually wearing the pants.

I played air piano in front of church on Sunday.
This is also true.
I was asked to play the last song during the morning service at church. I sat down at the keyboard and my fingers were tickling the faux ivories and.... nothing. The piano had zero sound.
Everyone was staring.
The pastor turned around expectantly and said, "Let's close in song," in that solemn pastor-like voice.
I shook my head and said, "I got nothin'."
After a few moments, someone started singing "Thank You Lord for Saving My Soul".
I couldn't have agreed more.

Mullets rock.
Again with the 80s party. Mullets rocked the 80s! As I was writing this post, I was shopping for mullet wigs online.
They are extravagant in their obnoxiousness.

Ehem.

Sorry about that.

I didn't end up ordering the wigs. For one, they are extravagant in their obnoxiousness.
And two, I didn't want to spend $8 each plus $7 shipping and handling on something that would inhibit other guests from being able to eat their dinner.

We have a toddler sized zucchini in our garden.
True. It happens every year. I pick and pick and pick and then all of a sudden I have HUGE zucchini that I can't even lift out of the dirt.

The dapper ring-bearer outfits modeled above were only $15 each.

I'm turning 30 next week and am happy about it.

Jeff wrestled a cow and the cow won.
Jeff said, "He had 400 pounds on me and wouldn't listen to reason." A cow got into the barn where we store the hay and was wedged between the stacks. The result are some very bruised ribs. It could have been worse. Eek.

Emma is working on inventing a machine that folds laundry
(go ahead and pre-order yours now).
Emma is very excited these days about inventing things. I enjoy watching her brain work. She often draws pictures and talks through the process. She's also working on a vacuum that sucks up toys and throws them into the correct location in a child's room.

Rem is walking fast and furious.
This right here is the lie. Rem isn't walking. Not even close. For being an early crawler, he has no interest in walking.

I am painting my entryway a stellar shade of taupe.
I completed it yesterday. It is taupe-tacular.

I am painting an end table a stellar shade of red.
The jury is still out on whether or not this will happen.

Thanks to all who participated in my quiz. As you can see, it's been eventful around here. :)

Truth or Lie.

There is so much to blog about, but nothing that is itching for its own post.

So I thought I would play a little game of "Truth or Lie." The following is a list of possible blog posts for recent events around here. I could write about each one and bore you to tears. Or we could play this fun game!

Which one is not true?

Mandy thinks she is 7 years old.

I bought acid washed, peg-legged jeans.

I played air piano in front of church on Sunday.

Mullets rock.

We have a toddler sized zucchini in our garden.

The dapper ring-bearer outfits modeled above were only $15 each.

I'm turning 30 next week and am happy about it.

Jeff wrestled a cow and the cow won.

Emma is working on inventing a machine that folds laundry
(go ahead and pre-order yours now).

Rem is walking fast and furious.

I am painting my entryway a stellar shade of taupe.

I am painting an end table a stellar shade of red.

Okay, that's it for now. One of the above sentences is a complete un-truth. All the others are completely true (no partial truths around here).

Leave a comment if you have a guess. :)

Resting in friendship.

I was 16, nervous to the soles of my perfectly white Keds, and getting ready to fly from Portland to San Diego. I was taking a summer position to work in the dining hall at a Christian conference center on Palomar Mountain. I knew the director and his wife and that was it.

Did I mention I was nervous to the soles of my perfectly white Keds?

I worried I wouldn't make any friends. Little did I know that after a month at camp I would call my mom to have her extend the date of my plane ticket so I could stay another month. The girls I lived and worked with covered the spectrum of personality traits from daring to cautious, silly to quiet. During those late night talks, long, meandering hikes, treasured days off, and short afternoons by the pool, I got to know a group of girls whose friendships would forever be imprinted on my heart.

Hill, me, and Laura.
Seaside, Oregon 2010.

Our paths have taken us through life's ups and downs. Now the road reaches from Oregon, to Tennessee, to the Bay Area. College graduations, weddings, just-for-fun trips, babies, and family vacations brought us back to similar locations over the years and I'm grateful for those memories.

This week we met again, a purposeful trip to celebrate Laura's coming baby. Between the 3 of us we are all happily married to good guys and we have 6 children! 3 girls (Emma, Mandy, and Hillary's daughter, Camille), and 3 boys (Rem, Hillary's son, Russell, and Laura's baby boy). Has life really changed that much in 15 years? Oh yes. Our normal days take us far from the realm of carefree days at camp. Yet together again (without children) we easily fell into the pattern of longs talks and long meandering walks.

Opryland Hotel, Nashville, Tennessee, May 2008

Our last time all together was at Laura's in Nashville. Mandy was along and we had a great time. Flying with Mandy at 8 months was hard work. I remembered that on the 3 days I was all by myself this week. The last time that happened was 6 and a half years ago.  I could sleep in, eat whenever/whatever I wanted, and only took a nap if I chose to while watching an HGTV marathon.

It was absolute bliss.

Hey look! It's Rem wearing pink.
Or Mandy at 8 months in May of 2008 in Nashville.

I was honored to fly to the Bay Area last September to meet up with Hill. She and I were expecting babies, both in October (her girl and my boy were born 2 weeks apart). I took pictures of Hill on the beach at Half Moon Bay.

Oh what a difference a year can make. This July, Hillary and her family stopped at our place on their road trip.

Camille and Remington. Both turn 1 year old in less than a month. :)

On our most recent trip to the beach, I persuaded Laura to let me take a few maternity pictures of her. She is due on November 4th with her first, a baby boy. I remember not thinking maternity pictures were necessary with my first child. Do I really want to remember this? I remember thinking in my uncomfortable state. I have precisely 3 pictures of me pregnant with Emma and I look like I had bad gas in every single one.

I wanted to give Laura pictures that show how beautiful she is a woman, a mother on the brink. She will look back and remember the time she carried her son with fond memories -- if she is anything like the rest of us moms who have terrible memories when it comes to remembering pregnancy with any kind of accuracy.

There are more pictures on my photography site: www.AlysunPetersPhoto.com

All in all, it was a fantastic vacation. I left on Monday really excited to get a break from my family and I returned today with great excitement at seeing them again. Amazing how that works!

Special thanks Laura and Hillary for taking the long plane journeys to make our girls week an amazingly, fun reality.

To my travel-agent-extraordinaire mother-in-law for finding us space at the timeshare during a busy week.

To my parents for coming to ride herd on my munchkins.

And to my wonderful husband who said, "Go, have a good time.

I have it made my friends.

I am blessed beyond measure.

Losing it.

It sure would be awesome to do a post titled, "Missions Accomplished!"

But this isn't it. Think of it more as a pit-stop on the road to success.

Losing 50 pounds is really, really hard work. I don't enjoy it one bit. I much prefer to gain weight. If only all the mirrors in all the land were smashed, my conscience about living a healthy life didn't exist, and I didn't have a closet full of nice clothes that were 4 sizes smaller. Then I would sit around and eat brownies, Mac n' Cheese, lasagna, tacos without the salad, mashed potatoes and gravy... and that's just for lunch.

(August 2009)

I don't mind diet and exercise actually. It's the diet and exercise with little result or progress that I don't enjoy. Makes me want to lay around feel sorry for myself. And eat brownies.

Since Rem's birth, my body naturally shed about 25 pounds with mild exercise and no diet. That was before Christmas. Losing weight without really trying, that is fun stuff. Then reality set in. With an additional 25 pounds that was sticking like super glue, I realized I was going to have to start working hard.

(end of November 2009)

Here's what I've been doing since January 1st (6 months ago):

  • exercise. I've done a few different things, either the 15 minute T-tapp Basic Workout, walking (2 miles), The Shred, or Windsor Pilates. Some with gusto, others without.

  • Counting calories. SparkPeople.com is a free online service; I enter in what I ate during the day and their calculator tells me how many calories, carbs, protein, fiber it had. It's an easy way to keep track. Ever consume an entire bag of potato chips? The stomach ache is nothing compared to seeing on the computer screen that I just ate 2,976 calories.

I lost 6 pounds in 6 months. I think the experts say that is healthy, but I would really like to be done with this journey and get back to my pre-pregnancy weight. I achieved it twice. Seems like I should be able to again.

I thought about what worked before and realized I would have to bump it up a notch. If T-tapp Total Workout (55 minutes) worked before, then I would do it again, plus the 7 Minute Miracle, plus walking. And add a couple more painful restrictions:

  • Avoiding Dairy. Sniff. Sniff. Love the stuff. It doesn't love me.

  • Avoiding sugar. Sniff. Sniff. Sniff. Tears coursing down my face. Love the stuff. It makes me chubby.

My T-Tapp Total Workout was scratched and non-workable since the last time I used it with Mandy's baby-weight attempt. I kept thinking about doing the long workout again, but the T-Tapp DVDs are pretty expensive. I finally ordered a new DVD and started getting up an hour earlier. On alternate days, I'm following a Half-Marathon 14 week walking training schedule and walking, using T-Tapp technique. It looks a lot like race-walking. Do not mock. It's an Olympic Sport.

I look just like this during my morning race-walk. But I wear pants.

I walk between 2-4 miles, 4 days a week rain or shine. I'm loving it. I love being outside in the quiet. I walk a fast 15 minute mile, yet have the stillness to myself and God. He's rocking my world People! I sing. I pray. I pump my arms and use "linier allignment." And I walk back into the house a completely different woman than when I left. I'm ready to jump piles of laundry in a single bound.

And I'm seeing significant changes in my body.

I started 3 weeks ago on this turbo charged workout schedule and have lost 6 more pounds.

And I feel like this....

I still have a ways to go, yet actually feel comfortable in my own skin for the first time in a year and a half.

I know I sound like an info-mercial for T-Tapp, I only mention it every other post or so. Wish I hadn't spent my energy on the Shred and $8.99, and some major joint pain. But T-Tapp DVDs aren't cheap... and I am. Yet, I believe Teresa Tapp is on to something with her lymph-node talk, lactic acid purging, linear alignment, and pelvis tilting. And I can't argue with the results. Not only do I feel strong and feel good (no back pain with no chiropractor visits), I've also lost inches. Lots of them. Like 35.75 inches from my upper body, hips, thighs, calves, and arms.

The key with any plan like this isn't just diet and exercise, its consistency and making wise choices. Seeing positive changes makes the motivation much easier to come by. Skinny jeans, are you reading this? I'm coming for you.
