Oh, Mandy

I wasn't ready. There came a day not too long ago when I went to my baby's room to get her up from a nap and the baby was not there. In her place stood a grinning, mischievous toddler. I looked around for the baby, but it was clear that the baby had been growing with wit and intelligence, had longer arms and legs, and a had a curiosity for the world around her.

Mandy's favorite things are books. She looks at the pages, wants books read to her, specifically the Foot Book at least 100 times per day.

She also loves being the center of attention and is sucessful at making people laugh with her silly antics.

This new baby cell phone is her favorite toy she received for Christmas, upside down or not. We've already grown quite weary of hearing Elmo sing, "Da, da, da, da, Elmo's world," also at least 100 times per day.

Mandy is so smart and loves to draw too. She knows exactly what to do with this Magna Doodle and gets so irritated when she can't erase it by herself. I have another extremely independent child. Her temper is quick to come and we've seen glimpses of her stubborn side.

This age of discovery and curiosity and growing as a toddler is my favorite. I fall more in love with this child every day and I didn't know it was possible to love her more. She's the most loving child I've ever encountered, giving hugs and kisses out freely. I joke that I should charge for her hugs, people love them so much. She's often singing chant-like tunes as she goes -- her melodies, or lack there of, are beautiful to my ears. Mandy is also one of the most active little ones around and is running and moving all the live long day when she isn't sleeping (even in her bed it sounds like a bouncy house as she is putting herself to sleep by jumping and falling all over in her bed, thumb and fore finger in her mouth and blanket tucked under her chin).

This post is a shameless "I love my kid, isn't she cute?" post -- like it or not. I am so incredibly blessed by this child and just a bit of the joy I find in her bubbled out today. :)

Christmastime

Our incredibly busy Christmas season has come to a close. Like any big event, much preparation goes into it and then it is over faster than the snow man melted in our front yard. The best part of the last week was the family. Family, family, and more family. The presents were fantastic, the food outrageously rich and delicious, the decorations beautiful, but the family is what makes the fun memories. Where else can old humorous tales make us laugh and remember? We joked about cousin Phil selling us his junk when we were kids, Vince's tooth that got nocked out by the stool end table in Grandma's basement, Bobbi's dislike of the family green beans, how Andrea always reads a book before she gives it away, and the always present festive holiday sweaters worn by the matriarchs. The past segued into the future as we shared our lives with each other. Jeff and I feel fortunate, although sometimes overwhelmed that we have 6 family Christmas events to attend each year, making 26 gifts that we bought this year. At each one, gifts are exchanged, much food is enjoyed, and we get together with family who come from near and far, though treacherous weather.

I didn't take enough pictures last year, so I went overboard with picture taking at our celebrations with my mom's family on Tuesday, my immediate family on Wednesday, Jeff's family on Thursday, the beach with my dad's family on Thursday and Friday, Jeff's mom's family on Saturday, and Jeff's other extended family on Sunday. I know these pictures are hard to see in the collage, but only about 4 of you care (click on the image to enlarge it). I will probably post more later in boring January when I am dreaming of fudge and eating carrot sticks to try and lose the 7 pounds I gained since Thanksgiving. Yes, 7 pounds. I enjoyed every munch, crunch, and ooy-gooy morsel and now the hard work begins. I love Christmastime. :)

Let there be light...

There is nothing like the power going out to remind us of everything we take for granted. We had quite a lot of ice here and our power went out Saturday night and then came back on for a few hours while we were at church. It has been out again until just now (Tuesday midmorning). Thankfully my resourceful husband hooked up a generator so we could run some things in the house, like lights in the evenings so we could take the flashlights away from the crazy children and my sewing machine so I could work on some projects I really should have done a month ago. I am dependent on electricity for everything and found myself in a fowl mood without the "finer things in life" -- like going out to the garage to warm up milk for the baby on the camp stove and no hot baths or showers, let alone laundry that is piling high. Someone pointed out at our church service on Sunday that going without electricity forces us to simplify things and think about Jesus' birth. While that is true in the respect that we are without distracting entertainment (we can't go on the computer and my stir crazy 4 year old can't watch Cinderella and is forced to play with a flashlight), most of my life is harder without modern conveniences. So, here am I am just stating that I love my electricity and how easy my life is. I am very thankful for my house and all its fancy appliances and my handy, wonderful husband who made me happy by powering up the generator. Now back to reflecting on Jesus' birth in comfort.... Christmas pictures: you can do it!

I like to take a holiday picture of my beautiful children each year to give to family. It's just what our dear ones want for Christmas, I am sure of it. It isn't very hard to get kids to be cute and smile for the camera, so I want to encourage you to try it yourself. What do you have to lose? You sanity, that's what.

First, spend at least 1 hour cleaning up and moving furniture to find a Christmas backdrop with nice balance and color and lighting for your photo shoot. Don't worry, your children will help you with this project by playing nicely with their own toys in their room while you clean. Make sure to time the process so that your children are all alert and happy for pictures.

Next, dress the children in coordinating holiday wear. This frantic process will feel a lot like Sunday morning, only you won't have the church nursery and Sunday School class to look forward to.

Finally, pose your calm, happy subjects in front of the peaceful Christmassy scene and take some pictures. It shouldn't take you long to capture their perfect smiles.

I never put up with bad behavior during photo shoots. Smiles are required and expected. After all, this is a fun experience for everyone involved.

Just snap away, taking pictures of this rare and beautiful age. You will never be able to forget this. It will be etched in your memory forever.

Don't worry about some of the more awkward shots. Any picture is helped by proper cropping and a nice vignette. Yes, that is much better.

Remember what I said about bad behavior. It is never tolerated. Silliness is for play time not for photo shoots.

Remind them that this picture is for their grandparents and aunts and uncles, not for the So You Think You Can Dance tryouts.

Don't worry, you will get plenty of precious pictures. By sheer miracle you may even get one that is okay for a gift.

Favorite Christmas song

The funny song below (courtesy of Tawny's blog and YouTube) made me think of my favorite Christmas songs. I like O Holy Night for a calm one and Deck the Halls for a more peppy one.

What is your favorite Christmas song?

Accomplishment

I am bursting with pride.

Emma folded her clothes without being asked. Perfectly. Quietly. Diligently. And then she put them away. All without being asked to do so.

As a mom who is home with my kids 24/7, I often feel like I am spinning my wheels. Time doesn't really fly when I am reprimanding, enforcing rules, training, and teaching. I say "no" and discipline many times per day. I fail and I lose my temper. Most the time I wonder if I am doing any good at all, but I trudge on, remembering that training these children is my highest calling; a privilege and a command from God. He would not have given me this challenge if he could not equip me to do it well.

Proverbs 22:6 - Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.

Proverbs 1:8 - Sons (and daughters) should hear the instruction of their fathers and not forsake the law of their mothers.

Deuteronomy 6:6-9 - These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the door-frames of your houses and your gates.

I am encouraged by the small things. I cherish hearing, "I'm sorry, next time I obey," from Emma and seeing Mandy, even at one year old, turn away from her biggest temptation, the Christmas tree. And today I was humbled when I walked into Emma's room to prod her into getting dressed (like I told her to do 15 minutes previously) and found her folding her clothes.

With charming improper grammar she said, "I not could find any clothes to wear. So I need to fold them first."

The clothes that were strewn across her room were now neatly folded on her bed. I was in total disbelief, remembering all the times we fought about cleaning up her clothes, her messy room always being an issue. Discipline was always necessary to get her to do anything. And then she decided today to do it herself. Of course I exclaimed at her fine work and she brimmed with satisfaction. She said, "I do a good job folding clothes." The pride she had in her accomplishment was surely worth all the hours I've spent teaching, training, reprimanding, and disciplining. Very worth it.

Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!

Oh the weather outside is frightful,
But the fire is so delightful,
And since we've no place to go,

Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!

We seldom have snow in our neck of the woods. Every winter we are taunted by a few snow flurries, but the thick sticking snow, the snow that makes snow families in front yards, comes few and many years between. I have good memories from childhood winter storms and later fun in the dry snows of the Saskatchewan prairies. My husband and I enjoyed recounting memories as we drove slowly home from Salem on ice covered roads last night. When we left home mid afternoon it was above freezing and the 3 inches of snow from the morning had long melted. We were on our way to a Christmas production starring our good friend, Jenni, as Mary. She had a solo and we didn't want to miss it. We enjoy a good snowy adventure, so when the roads turned white and the temperature dropped 6 degrees, we kept going. The Christmas production was spectacular and Jenni did a wonderful job, playing the perfect Mary with a real baby, playing the infant Jesus.

On the way home we slipped and slid through intersections and saw tire tracks from other cars skidding into the ditch. We stopped at Arctic Circle for hamburgers, it only seemed fitting and we were the only customers who braved the real Northwest Arctic Storm. That has a catchy ring to it. I haven't yet turned on the tv to hear what the media has named this one (they always come up with some wintery name and have coverage for the entire day of our few inches of snow melting away -- it's quite dramatic). We drove home very slow with my capable husband behind the wheel and here are a few of my snow memories that I recalled:

  • The big hill behind our house on Pioneer Road was great for sledding. My dad stayed home from work for the big snows of my early childhood. We had such fun going up and down that hill.
  • When I was about 10 or 11 it snowed a whole bunch and my sunday school class had a sledding party at our teacher's property outside of town. I desperately wanted to go and I begged my dad to take me and also my friend, Janelle, who lived on the opposite side of town. My dad agreed, but he couldn't make it up Janelle's long driveway in our little car. Janelle and her dad came snow shoeing through the snow and I thought, "How cool! They have snow shoes." We finally got to the snow party and it was SO great with hot chocolate and cookies and a warm fire inside the house.
  • My college memories include making perfect snow angels outside my dorm with a bunch of giggling girls, going to hockey games where heaters hung from the ceiling, through water balloons at my friend Bryce as he came out of his dorm in retaliation for him dumping green jello on me at the caff, walks through the snow with friend, and watching the Northern Lights in the breath taking cold while being mesmerized by God's creation.
  • And finally, the best memory of all, Jeff proposed to me in the snow. We were on Mt. Rainier in November and it was terribly cold. I will never forget the sight of him down on one knee in the snow with a dazzling diamond sparking from the lighted ring box held up for me to keep forever.
We finally made it home after collecting our girls from Jeff's parents house. Mandy was fast asleep, but Emma said, "Grandma said to quick run and get into bed before you saw me still up." We love grandma's house. :) All is well this morning with 2 slightly grumpy children. But I have a cup of tea and the house is warm and the snow is beautiful. It is only about 22 degrees, so a little cold for more snow people today.

If you get snow all winter long, you probably think I am crazy to get excited about a few inches, but this is the Northwest and things are different here. The ice and snow canceled every conceivable activity today and people everywhere are taking a forced break. I saw a few truckers braving the highway by our house and one or two cars out and about. And then there is my husband who is out feeding cows. He loves an excuse to get out in this weather. He pulled Emma to our barn on the sled and brought back wood for the fire. She lasted about 10 minutes outside in this below freezing temperatures.

I better get to making some soup for my cold husband who will undoubtedly put his icy hands on my stomach when he returns home. This is a practice I can always dread, make that count on. I will howl and scream and the girls will giggle and then he'll touch their faces and they will scream and giggle. Then we'll all need some hot soup. Enjoy the cold! Read More.. Read More..

Oh the weather outside is frightful

The girls were so cute outside yesterday morning as we rolled snow balls around in our yard. I love little ones in hats and hoods and mittens. It warms my heart.

Mandy can finally walk good enough to stay up with her boots.  The purple snow suit is one I bought second hand for Emma when we made our trip to Canada when she was one. How time flies!

mullet-ish

Mandy's hair has issues theses days and I am afraid it is a little mullet-ish. I've seen other little girl's go through this stage and emerge on the other side with long flowing locks. Should I trim it or let it grow?

I took a few pictures to prove my point and get my blog audience's unwavering guidance. I'm not sure that "unwavering" is really a compliment, but I appreciate your opinions all the same.

So you see she has little wispy hairs trailing down her collar. I am tempted, very tempted to take the scissors to her, but then she will have hair like Emma. Emma has hair that doesn't grow and she's had the same hair style for 3.75 years -- ever since she grew a mullet and I whacked it off.

Since I never endured the mullet stage with Emma, I just don't know what to do. Help me please!

Does she need to wear a hat for the next year? If so, we'll have to have it surgically put on because Mandy REALLy doesn't like things on her head. Unless it is a nice clean pair of underwear and then she has loads of fun putting them on her head. But not a hat. Only underwear.

It's difficult to get pictures of the back of Mandy because she is so eager to have her picture taken. So I bribed her with a whole box of Wheat Thins and she got to sit on the dining room table. See how serious I take this mullet problem?

Love stories I love

We subscribe to netflix and really enjoy having movies at our disposal. We don't watch much tv at all any more, but enjoy a good movie every now and then. We used to rent a movie about once a month and cringe at the price, all the while hoping it would be a good one. And now we have our queue of movies and shows we want to watch and the next item on the list is shipped after we return the previous one. Today Emma and I discovered that we can finally watch movies on demand (all the old classics) with our Macintosh computer. She watched a Christmas movie this morning about an angel while I made Cherry Chocolate Bread Pudding -- it was a fun morning.

My husband is more of the Action Adventure/sci-fi kind of guy while I prefer a good Romantic Comedy. Our current queue has our choice of films every other one and it usually works out great. When his movie comes, I find a good book to read while I pretend to watch with him. My wonderful husband is nicer to me and suffers through the film, adding his own commentary. We have great fun. Our latest Romantic Comedy was "Maid of Honor" and I was so disappointed with it. Instead of a fun, romantic plot, it was about a womanizing playboy who couldn't stop having sex with women long enough to realize he was in love with his female best friend, the only woman in New York he hadn't slept with.  This disappointing movie got me wishing Hollywood would make movies like they used to, even ten years ago. They weren't full of sex and blatant displays of homosexuality, they just had two people with a fun plot who fell in love with a nice kiss at the end.

Here are my top 5 picks:

  1. While You Were Sleeping, with Sandra Bullock. To me, this is one of the best Christmas love stories probably because I watched it with my sister and friends so much I have it memorized. "You know Jo Junior is still single...". Lucy: "Shocker."
  2. You've Got Mail, with Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. I asked my husband what his favorite Romantic Comedy was and this was his pick if he HAD to choose. I have to agree that this is a great one. The chemistry is great and the plot is funny and best of all, clean.
  3. The Notebook. Holy smokes I love this movie. I couldn't watch it every day or I would surely run out of tears, but it is a poignant love story. It has a couple scenes that you would be embarrassed to show your mom, so skip over those, but for the most part it is just heart wrenchingly beautiful.
  4. Hitch with Will Smith. This is a new one that I think was done really well. I laugh hysterically through parts, like the allergic reaction part and the part when he nocks her into the water.
  5. One Night with the King, Fox Faith movie about Esther. There are so many details in the story of Esther that are not explained in the Bible, yet this movie weaves a fictional plot that had me clenching my throw blanket between nervously fisted fingers. I fell in love with the king and was inspired by gentle, sweet Esther.
I had a hard time picking just 5 because I love a good love story so much. What is your favorite in this genre?

Sears Portrait Fiasco

If you know me well, and I think you do, you know that I really don't like mall studio photographers. Sure their cheap, but the process is frustrating because the people care more about selling pictures, no matter what they look like, than the fine art of photography. One too many bad experiences at these types of places is what led me to start taking pictures myself when Emma was a baby. With enough time and patience, I do get great photos of my own kids and don't have to waste my time in the studio. I print the pictures affordably at Costco and everyone is happy. It's when I have to put my children in a picture with other children that my job gets very, very tricky. Suddenly mommy is divided with photographer and getting their attention is so hard.

My sister and I attempted pictures of our four children together earlier in the fall. It was a miserable failure because the kids were crabby and the lighting outside was very bad because it took us too long to get them ready. All the pictures were terrible of the foursome and we vowed to try again, earlier in the day with a better backdrop. Then, I got a coupon in the mail from Sears Portrait Studio for $4.99 for 36 pictures including a 10x13", 8x10" and a bunch of wallets -- perfect for splitting up amongst our extended family. Figuring there was no way I could even print the pictures that cheap if I took them myself, plus the alluring idea that we would be in a studio with good lighting, my sister and I decided to take the kids there.

My cheapskate sister and myself were very upfront with the "photographer" and told her that we were planning on buying only one pose and using the $4.99 coupon. "Is there a sitting fee?" We asked. "No, no sitting fee, now let's take pictures. I am going to do 6-8 poses of the children." Well, she did 3 poses and the kids had had it. I've worked enough with kids to know that the first 15 minutes are the best and there is very little a mother can do to coax a grumpy toddler. The "photographer", who incidentally was wearing about a size 40FF black push-up bra under her stained and wrinkled, uniform white polo shirt, did not agree and kept pushing for more poses with our now screaming kids. The fact that I am annoyed with this photographer has little to do with the fact that we got to see way more of her black bra that we wanted to and more to do with her not listening to us when we said, "The kids are done. The kids are done. The kids are done" about 50 times. She wouldn't give up and I finally said, "We are done now," with authority in my non-confrontational voice and I started loading Mandy into the stroller. She was visibly frustrated because I assume her superiors require her to get a certain number of poses with the group and individual. Sorry, lady, but I am not going to buy any pictures from you of my children crying. I see that every day. I want the $4.99 deal, please, with smiling kids that we got half and hour ago. I didn't say that, because I am very nice. Too nice actually.

We waited our obligatory 15 minutes while the lady dragged and dropped photos into really ugly collages and turned the pictures black and white and other pretty cool options that I can do in my sleep with Photoshop. We sat down and looked through all of her creations and I even complimented her ability to capture the kids looking good. We had 2 poses we liked, each having their own issues, but all the children were looking in both of them. One of them had lighting issues and Benton's eye was a little droopy. The second pose, the one we ended up choosing, was really cute with all the kids looking and Benton and Emma were smiling while Nathaniel and Mandy looked pleasant. My only issue was that Emma's feet were completely cut off -- you know my problem with that kind of thing. I resolved myself that no one but me really cares.

We chose our pose, told the photographer for the 50th time that we wanted the one pose and here was the coupon for $4.99. That's it, now we need to get our children who are running and screaming up and down the hallway. The lady was visibly irritated and kept trying to upsale us -- adding on a proof sheet that included both poses we liked for only $14.99 more. My cheap sister and I are used to this kind of thing and continued to explain that we wanted this ONE pose for $4.99. The lady was frustrated and it was at this point I became convinced that she worked on commission. Perhaps if we would have purchased more, she would have had enough money to buy herself a white bra that fit and an iron to make herself more professional looking. Too bad for her, we only wanted to spend $4.99.

Finally she gave into us and said in a snotty voice, "You can add more pictures, but you cannot change this package once I order it." Her finger was poised to click the "order" button on the screen and my sister and I both agreed. Once the order was made she got up and made her way to the counter to take our money saying as she went, "Oh, and there is a $5 fee since you only chose one pose and you had more than 2 people in the photo." "WHAT!" My sister and I exclaimed in unison. The lady explained again about the $5 fee and it made even less sense the second time. She apologized for the extra fee in a rather patronizing voice, but there was nothing she could do. It was at this point that the older kids were running back and forth with toys and the babies were crying needing naps and food badly. I told the lady that I specifically asked about a sitting fee and there was not supposed to be one. There was supposedly nothing the lady could do and we exasperatedly paid the extra $5.

My sister and I are both non-confrontational introverts and were horrified that we didn't just walk out, refusing to pay the made-up fee. Our mother would have never stood for such a thing as a fee tacked on at the end when the coupon said nothing about it. The bottom line was that we got taken and unfortunately were unwilling to leave without the pictures. We spent over an hour at Sears, not to mention the time it took to get the children looking cute and perfect and for me to drive into Salem.

I've spent quite a lot of time now on the phone with Sears and online letting them know how I feel about their service and fees at the Portrait Center. While the customer service agent who I eventually talked to was sympathetic, I doubt whether any resolution will be made over $5. Because really, who cares about $5? I DO. To add insult to injury, the photos are not available for viewing online and we have to wait 2 weeks to get them. There is a glitch in their system and has been for 2 months. A very unhelpful person at Sears told me that she didn't know what they were doing about the problem.

Needless to say I won't be going back to Sears. I am certain now that no cheap coupon is worth the hassle. I love taking pictures, so I will do it myself from now on. And I will print them myself too. And if any of you want to skip the hassle of pushy mall photo studios, I will gladly take pictures for you too. No hidden fees, I promise. :)

And here is a picture of Mandy before we left for the Portrait Studio.

Christmas Story Land

On Monday evening we went to the Christmas Story Land in Albany. Here's the information if you are local and want to go:

December 5th to 20th at the Linn County Expo (Albany), families are invited to experience this festive atmosphere with over 1,200 Christmas trees and 70 scenes set up with traditional storybook characters. There will also be two train layouts, a Bear Country attraction, and Santa will be there.

Admission is free, but canned food donations are welcome.

Open from 6-8:30pm Monday through Friday and Saturday and Sunday from 10am - 8:30pm

It was a really cool place to visit (especially for free) and my girls LOVED it. It is held inside at the fair grounds' building, but it was still pretty cold. We may go again before the 20th and dress warmer the next time.

There are little scenes set up between the Christmas trees. Some (adults) might consider them a little cheesy, but Emma thought they were great and entertaining.

There were two large trains set up. That was the highlight for Emma and the men.

Mandy loved all the stuffed animals and the lights on the short little fences. We managed to coral her and keep her from scaling any props.

Who knew stuffed animals with lights on them in a cold barn could be so fun! Did I mention that all this fun was for free?

My parents were visiting for a few days this week and we conned them into going with us to the Story Book Land. My dad pointed out this display and said that it looked like him and my mom in a few years.

It was such a fun time and I am glad that my parents were there too. Yesterday we headed over to the beach for the night at the house my grandma has rented for Christmas. She has the house for the whole month, so we were able to go mid week and enjoy the spacious accommodations. Now we are really looking forward to Christmas when the WHOLE family will be there.

I didn't take many pictures at the beach house, mostly because I was feeling lazy. We did a little shopping at the outlet malls and enjoyed a breath taking sunset. The sunset was a moment I wished I could have captured on camera, but my husband was right, a picture couldn't have done it justice. The sky was a blaze with colors of pink orange and an intoxicating color of blue. The sand was wet and reflected the colors all over. Truly a beautiful and fun experience.

Celebrating Libby

I love birth announcements. I really do. New life is indescribably beautiful and precious and I enjoy celebrating with digital goodies. I am really excited that my friend Amanda is using my design (she's wonderfully creative, but in the trenches with a brand new baby). It really helped me get the bid to jump up and down begging to do the birth announcement . She's a good friend to humor me and I am ticked pink, or in this case a wonderful color of creamy yellow, coral and mint, to do it for her.

Recipe

I am pretty tired of turning on my computer and seeing my gigantic mass of hair, so I need to post something to take its place. Here is a quick, easy recipe for Turkey Tetrazzini. It could also be Chicken or Ham Tetrazzini or Tuna Noodle Casserole. For other great recipes, check out the food blog I keep with a bunch of other food loving friends at Food Love.

America's Test Kitchen recipes never disappoint - - they often take forever and a day to prepare, but they are delicious. One recipe I really like for a quick, hearty dinner is their Turkey Tetrazzini. It's almost as simple as one of those boxed dinners like Pasta Roni and this is much cheaper and better for you.

Turkey Tetrazzini
2 tbs. butter
1/2 onion finely chopped
3 cups dried egg noodles
2 cups low sodium chicken broth (I used water and chicken base/boulion)
1 cup whole milk
1 cup frozen peas
2 cups chopped cooked turkey, chicken, ham, or tuna

Saute onion in butter about 5 minutes and add the noodles and liquid. Simmer uncovered, stirring occasionally about 10 minutes. Add turkey, chicken, ham, or tuna and peas. Heat an additional 5 minutes more.

*The original recipe calls for button mushrooms sauted with the onion for 15 minutes and then removed from the pan while noodles cook. Add them back in with the turkey and peas. Read More.. Read More..

Hair today

Do you know where I can get some good volumizing hair products? I'm so tired of my flat lifeless do.

Just a touch of sarcasm this morning. Sorry for the scare, but I wanted to share with you what I (and my laughing family) am greeted with each and every morning: my gi-normous hair. With the right moose, gel, palm aid, hair spray mix I can calm it down a notch and I think I will go do that. It feels like I am wearing 3 bike helmets on my head simultaneously. It's funny how women with thin hair want thick luxurious hair (this is what it looks like in the morning by the way) and those with barely controllable manes long for a flat hair day every now and then.

Tales from a 4 year old

Emma: Feel my muccle (while holding out her skinny little arm).

Me: Wow, that is a strong muscle. (As per the instructions from the speech therapist, I repeated the mispronounced word back to Emma correctly. Although I really wanted to say "muccle." Just try it. It sounds hilarious)

Emma: I am very, very, very strong. Now I can get my car out of a ditch.

Fashion foibles

It seems like Emma came out of the womb with her own agenda. Thankfully as a baby, her way of doing things matched up well with mine and I often congratulated myself that Emma was so scheduled and easy. My friends and family and finally baby Mandy helped me see that each child is different. Emma's scheduled nature was part of her determined personality that would show itself later.

Currently, Emma's personality shows itself in the clothes that she chooses to wear and my life isn't always easy.  She changes her clothes at least twice on any given day and sometimes 4 or 5 times. She must wear a skirt every day and making her wear jeans is tough; you'd think you asked her to commit the ultimate fashion blunder. Jeans? How un-cool. She must wear a dancing dress (not a skirt) to watch any movie that has dancing in it. Emma would prefer to never wear socks and only tights on Sundays. Pretty shoes are also only for Sunday.

I've learned to work around her fashion quirks because she is very opinionated about everything, even what she wears to bed. When she is happy, I am happy, unless she looks ridiculous and then she gets to change. That's my motto.

On Black Friday I found some clothes at Gymboree for Emma. She was beside herself with glee that I got her a dancing dress and a skirt to wear every day. Those were her words, said in the most gushing tone. She was so pleased and that made me feel pretty good about my bargains.

It's so nice to go out in public with Emma when she is wearing a darling matching outfit from Gymboree. It is everything I longed for when I dreamed of my little girl. She is so pretty and well behaved that she is a joy to take places.

I have moments like these and I take a picture because there are other moments, before we leave the house, that are not so lovely. Like yesterday when Emma came out wearing this outfit:

Look how pleased she is with herself. This picture was before I sat down and had a serious conversation about modesty with her. The black "shorts" are really the diaper cover that goes with her size 4T Christmas dress. A diaper cover, seriously. I should have hidden it the moment I saw the Children's Place dress included it, but I never anticipated this challenge. So, we had our first conversation about modesty and she totally didn't get it. I explained over and over again and finally ended up telling her that her legs would get cold so no, they are not shorts and no, she could not wear them. End of story. I know having 2 daughter that these kinds of conversations will be ongoing in our house. 'Till next time...

Our Christmas Letter

This is for the few people who got our Christmas card and picture and just checked out our blog for the first time. Here is our year in review:

Another year of adventures, fun, and challenges is behind us and shines perspective on what is to come. In leu of a paper Christmas letter this year, I decided to keep everything online. I blog at least a few times a weeks, so there wouldn't be anything revealed in a Christmas letter that you don't already know if you read Peters Paradise. We've had a good year and I'll recap:

Christmas last year found us surrounded by family and we celebrated the season with many get togethers, delicious cooking, and lots of gifts. Each year, when I start to get overwhelmed by all we have to do for Christmas, all I have to do is look around at the extended family we are so blessed to be part of and be close to. Being surrounded by all our family at this time of year is the best part!

We took off for a few days to Klamath Falls as a family in January. A blizzard snowed us in our cabin for a few extra days, but we didn’t mind. There was a hill right next to the house and we sledded every day and made snow people. It was the perfect way to enjoy winter since we rarely get snow at home. (Except this year where we had snow for almost 2 weeks right before Christmas.)

The winter is always gone before we know it and Jeff starts farming and working long hours again. I went on a trip to visit friends and family on the East Coast in May. Mandy accompanied me on the airplane and gave me many experiences that challenged my endurance as a mom. She didn't enjoy being cooped up in our shared seat; during one fit, she thru squash baby food all over the 20-something, preppy guy in the seat beside us. Mandy and I made it to Tennessee where I spent 3 days with my friend Laura and her husband in Nashville and my friend Hillary came also from her home in San Francisco for the visit. We shopped and toured and talked and talked some more. I've known Laura and Hillary for 12 year now and every time we are together, years fade away and our conversations are easy. Since I was already on the east coast, I then flew to Washington DC where my cousin Jessi took me on a whirlwind tour of the city. I stayed just 2 nights there, but had a wonderful time with my cousin and seeing such an amazing city.

As always the summer was full of working. The girls were a lot of fun and loved being outside. We made daily treks to find Daddy in the field and also enjoyed Jeff’s aunt, Janice, home from Africa for the summer months. Gathering to eat and be with family was the highlight of our days. I was busy this summer with photography sessions and enjoyed taking pictures for real customers for the first time. Senior portraits are my favorite. I officially started my business, complete with business cards. It is a creative outlet for me that I find challenging and really rewarding.

Emma is 4 years old now and we enjoy this delightful age. She is a sponge, taking in more than we realize until she repeats it back, amusing us with her intelligence and wit. She loves music and was singing along with “Dare to be a Daniel” when she suddenly stopped and said, “Daniel is my other name!” I confirmed to her that yes, Daniel was just like her middle name, Danielle. I then asked her what her whole name was and she responded, “My name is Emma Daniel Obey.” She is definitely listening. She is extremely determined, read stubborn, yet her developing personality also shows us that she is perceptive and thoughtful and compassionate.

Mandy is now 15 months and so much fun. She is almost always smiling. Mandy is social and tries to get people to smile back at her – it opens up many opportunities for conversation with strangers. Mandy is very busy and was scooting at 5 months and crawling at 7 months. She is now walking, carrying this and that around the house on unknown missions. She is surprisingly independent and would rather play by herself or sneak and steal her sister’s toys. Although they fight at times, the interaction between the girls is precious and a blessing I did not anticipate. Their early morning giggles make getting up easy and Emma often says to me, “I love this baby.”

Jeff’s life is immersed with the farm, but he also finds time for things he enjoys. He got an iPod this year and listened to hours and hours of sermons while he was working. I am in awe that he makes all those hours in the tractor/combine a learning opportunity. Watching him is a good example of how to grow your faith in the midst of a busy life. He is happiest when he is outdoors and goes out shooting with friends as often as he can. Our old house keeps him busy when he is home. I was very thankful for the work he did on my laundry room last winter, tiling and putting in cabinets. I love the shorter days in the winter and not just because I have my handyman around again, but because I love evenings with him home playing with the girls. Their favorite games are Hide and Seek, wrestling, and a frightening game where the girls go flying through the air on a leg catapult. Their laughter and love is my greatest joy.

We recently went on a trip to Canada and saw the beautiful Canadian Rockies in B.C. and Alberta. We stayed 3 days in the Canmore area before we drove to Saskatchewan to visit Amanda and Lindsay and family in Nipawin (3 hours north of Saskatoon). It was a blessing to be with their family and see the fulfilling life they have there, living and working on the campus of a small Christian college. We drove all night to skip a day of travel and rested in Cor D' Laine before heading home. We had a great time.

Jeff and I love our life together. In September, we went away by ourselves for the first time in almost 4 years while my parents watched the girls for 3 days. It was a refreshing time that reminded us both why we started this journey together. As parents, we feel blessed and our marriage is strong. We often say to each other, “Remember when…” about good times (and some bad too) from our 7 years together. The perspective we now have shows us how far we have come. We look forward to the blessings and even the challenges that are in our future. God is so good.

We hope this update finds you happy and healthy. We love hearing from you. Keeping in touch is easy for us with email at AJEPeters at gmail dot com.

Update:

I love Thanksgiving weekend. There is something about being surrounded by good family and fantastic food that makes me feel all warm and fuzzy. Also, Thanksgiving means sale ads and preparations for Friday morning shopping, which I also love.

We ate on Thursday with Jeff's immediate family and of course we had plenty of food and plenty of fun. It's an intimate affair with all 18 of us! Sorry no pictures because I forgot my camera.

My parents were in town and stayed with us although they went to my dad's side of the family for the celebrations. My mom, sister, and I wanted to go shopping on Friday morning, but my sister's husband had to work and it really would have put a cramp in our style to complete shopping by 7:30am so she could go home to be with her boys. We came up with a plan to make everybody happy and my nephews stayed the night at our house, leaving my dad home with the 4 grandkids.

It's a tradition now that my mom gets the kids matching Christmas pj's. They were so cute!

The children did well, grandpa survived. But enough about that and back to the SHOPPING. It was so great. Being up that early with a bunch of other people high on bargains is exhilarating. I know some people just can't fathom why anyone would participate in the insanity, but I think it must be like "The Princess Bride"; you have to grow up with it to appreciate it. Half price socks! How can you resist?

Half price sock have nothing to do with The Princess Bride, but I have heard from people that they think the movie is SO dumb if they only watch it as an adult. Then, those of us who grew up with the crazy movie think it is a classic, a must see. Just like Black Friday shopping. See the comparison?

Jeff came with us just for something to do and he claims he can't sleep without me in bed beside him so he might as well go with me. He is the sweetest guy and proved to be very valuable in the mayhem. He stood in line so us ladies could shop and patiently stood with all the crazed, make-up free, frazzled women for over an hour and a half at Kohl's. I love that man! At one point I came up to him in line and he was holding 3 12-packs of multi colored wash clothes, a bath mat and some sterling silver earrings. He nonchalantly said, "Just a few things I picked up along the way." Apparently my mom had found him and dropped off her treasures. I laughed so hard -- things are funnier at 4:30am.

I purchased some good finds and am well on my way to being done with my Christmas shopping. I only have a few things left and will probably order things online. My list of sewing projects keeps growing though, so I should probably get back to that instead of designing a new December blog header and template. Oh, the importantant things in life. Check out my poll and leave a comment, I've missed you all this week!

The bag lady

I just finished another bag and I am truly going to have a hard time giving this one away. I love this one even though it caused me major frustrations. My life would be much easier if I just followed directions.

I didn't have enough fabric to make the bag exactly like I wanted it, so I invented my own design that had the main portion of the bag as one piece with one seam and the bottom contrasting with piping for support. It worked out fine, but was much harder when it came to sewing in the lining to match it up. My other frustration involved taking out all the precisely placed pins as I sewed the seam to completion only to discover the machine had run out of bobbin thread at the beginning. Sewing is such a headache sometimes.

This is my first day at home all week, so I need to get more projects done. Hope you are all in the USA are enjoying your holiday weekend. Thanksgiving was great and the shopping was SO fun. Did you get up early and shop and get the deals?

A year in the life of a blond...

January - Took her new scarf back to the store because it was too
tight.

February - Ordered new drapes for her computer because it had
windows.

March - Got excited when she finished a jigsaw puzzle in six months
because the box said "2-4 years."

April - Was trapped on an escalator for hours when the power went
out.

May - Couldn't make Kool-Aid because 8 cups of water wouldn't fit
into the little packet.

June - Couldn't learn to water ski because she couldn't find a lake
with a slope.

July - After losing in a breast stroke swimming competition,
complained to the judges that the other
swimmers were using their arms.

August - Told her blonde friend to hurry when trying to get into
their locked car using a coat hanger
because it was starting to rain and the top was down.

September - When asked what the capital of California was, she
answered "C".

October - Hates M &Ms because they are so hard to peel. Threw away
half because they were misprinted W&W.

November - Baked a turkey for four days because the instructions
said one hour per pound and she weighed 120.

December - Couldn't call 911 because there was no "11" on any phone
button. Read More.. Read More..

It's that time of year... almost

We're through. We're done. It's finished. It is officially the Christmas season at our house. We decorated last night and had a gay (happy) ol' time. We strung the tree and adorned its branches with sparkling ornaments. White Christmas entertained us as we worked. Emma was a fantastic helper this year and I was really impressed with how well she did in her ornament placement on the tree. She has a real creative side and it was fun to watch her. Mandy had a good time too, toddling around smashing glass balls together. Miraculously none of my ornaments were broken in the reverie.

The girls dressed up in finery and my husband commented that this kind of fun was better than Christmas day. His comment was made from a chair as he read a tractor publication, but he was having a good time too.

I purchased the gold scarves at 90% off at an after-Christmas sale. I get a little giddy and illogical around fantastic deals and tend to purchase things I have no purpose for, like the gold scarfs. Emma and Mandy sure love them though.

I LOVE the Christmas tree! It is a big highlight for me. That is really the whole reason why I decorate so ridiculously early. It goes by so fast, so I figure I can enjoy it longer. Next year maybe I'll just decorate in October. My husband thinks I should leave all the decorations up all year -- it would save him some work (this comment was also made from behind the tractor publication).

The decorations on a Christmas tree tell a lot about a family. I like to have a tree that is color coordinated with white lights and garland. I try to keep to the red/gold theme, but I don't deny space on my tree for any ornament. Of course the really ugly ones get relegated to the back, but they are still there and I smile every year as I take them out of their storage tissue. I know some in my classy extended family reject ornaments that don't match, but I think they give the tree a homey feel.

That got me thinking... what do you think makes the perfect Christmas tree?

I love to decorate the fireplace mantle as well. I am supremely blessed to have an electrical outlet in the middle of the wall perfect for plugging in my Christmas gift shaded lights (also 90% off from Joann Fabric). It is a little known fact that there is a niche in the middle of this wall that holds an electrical outlet. Strange, but true. It is about 18" square and 4" deep, so kind of small for the proportions of the wall, plus the fact that there is an ugly plug-in glaring out of the hole. I really wonder what the builder was thinking with that original little niche. Consequently, I have a picture hung over the top.

Besides the tree, I have some other decorations that I adore. Like my ivory nativity from Africa. Our first trip to Africa was over Christmas and I was incredibly sick with Malaria up until about Christmas Eve. Still I have fond memories of being in Mozambique and celebrating simply with Jeff's aunt, Janice. We got the nativity set on the second trip, also in December, and our friend the ivory carver went a little nuts and made tons of them out of ivory and wood. We purchased all that he made and gave them away for gifts when we returned home. I don't know how our friends and family feel about the slightly odd looking Mary, Joseph, and baby Jesus, but we are really fond of them.

I know it isn't even Thanksgiving yet and you may be rolling your eyes at my early decorating frenzy, but please indulge my celebratory spirit. What decorations do you love at Christmas? And I am also looking forward to hearing what your perfect Christmas tree looks like. :)
