Moving Day!

Tomorrow we are moving into our new Portland apartment and I am knee-deep in preparation! I will be away for a couple days, but hopefully back up by Thursday or Friday (pending internet connection)...

This will be my uniform for the next few days (And I am a firm believer that you can't move without an ice-cold, cheap beer! Haha!)

Monday Muse(s)

I have recently taken a liking to The Whispertown 2000... Their music is a fantastic mix of sweet and salty! Plus the girls in the band, Morgan Nagler and Vanesa Corbala, rock some totally crush worthy get-ups!

If you haven't already seen their music video for the song "Old Times", check it out:

New room, meeting Stubby, and a day off

Blog readership is down by 75% as all of us are in the full swing of summer. Life is busy, busy, busy for most. Around these parts it is no different; we are busy, but not with typical summer activities. Jeff  works his normal long summer hours and I do my best to corral the girls while maintaining some kind of order around here, and get something done.... is that possible?

Last week we moved the girls upstairs to share the big room and us downstairs to our old room. This will make Mandy's old room the new baby's room, and the little room upstairs as the guest room. I could go into detail about all the reasons for this switch-er-oo, but I fear your eyes would start bleeding with the tedium. Suffice to say, the house has been in a complete disarray as I try to organize and sort and clean. I was able to contribute to a garage sale put on by my sister-in-law and her husband in town and I am so thankful for their willingness to sell my stuff for me -- it was good motivation.

I have a list still a mile long of things to do, but I'll share what I have done so far. The big room upstairs just "needed" to be painted (my dear hubby would disagree that the girls really cared). I painted one wall Robin's Egg Blue, arranged the girls' furniture about 14 times, put some pictures on the walls and spent a rediculous amount of time hanging curtains -- these are the times I miss my Handy Man so much! I found cute twin sheet sets on Amazon.com for $4.99 each and need to make curtains for three windows and the closet out of the extra set that I bought. I also bought matching headboards for their beds on Craig's List for $20 total. They will be painted, but will be great once they are done.

You know I live for a deal, I can't even imagine admitting if I bought something that WASN'T a deal! Like the sheet sets were $5 each, but the ones that inspired me from Serena and Lilly were $189 for a set. No worries here, my budget and my conscience won't allow such things. Check out this deal on wall art:

Picture frames from Goodwill: $4
11x14" prints $1.99 each
Photography: snap shots turned black and white
Spray paint: free leftover from another project
Ribbon: $.99c at Michael's

Total: $9 for eye catching wall art

Here is another peak at the room. I'll post the finished project after I finish all the sewing and painting sometimes before 2019.

Leaving the residual moving/organizing mess inside, we were outside on Friday afternoon when Emma came running to me saying, "Mandy put her finger in the door and now there is blood. There is a lots and a lots of blood. She needs a bandaid."

That was the understatement of the century as I ran to find Mandy on the steps in the garage with blood flowing everywhere from her hand. After getting the bleeding stopped, I determined that Mandy's finger was in the hinge side of the door when Emma closed the door. The door frame acted as a knife and filleted a piece of skin from the bottom of the nail to the tip, taking off the entire nail and about 1/8" of the end of her right ring finger. I actually found the intact nail and finger tip in the door later, confirming my theory. I would say I am now ready for CSI, but my constitution can't handle it. This was the nastiest thing I've had to deal with and it was all I could do to not pass out.

The poor baby will be in pain for quite awhile I fear. She doesn't sleep well at night, frequently waking up needing comfort and more morphine... I mean children's Tylenol. She is also cutting 2 top teeth and life is rather miserable at times.

This is why on Sunday, my wonderful husband said, "You need a break. Let's go to the beach!" We didn't have to teach Sunday School this week, so we headed off to enjoy the sunshine. It was terribly windy, but we went to Newport and looked at boats, ate at Mo's, bought salt-water taffy and some sugar-free chocolates for me, went shopping, and took naps.

It was windier than I've experienced at the OR coast in many years, so we carted our sand toys right back to car after Emma melted in tears with sand in her eyes and blasting her legs -- or was that me crying. It is all a blur now.

It was such a good day and just what I needed. The summers on the farm do not get shorter or easier, but a good attitude makes all the difference.  I realized that there is no way to be both bitter at my husband's absences and also glad for his limited presence. If I wallow in the bitterness when he is away, it permeates our time together like a poison. We fight and everyone is in a bad mood -- guaranteed. This would apply to anyone whose spouse is gone often for work. It is very easy to think of how hard it is to have him gone instead of how wonderful it is so have him there. I have much to be thankful for. My goal this summer is to make our limited family time a joy, filled with happy memories for the girls and for me... tears of bitterness not included.

Now back to work.... :)

Indulging in sugar free treats makes my day. I try to limit my sweet treats to 1 a day, since aspertain and other sugar free alternatives aren't healthy for me. All the chemical alterations can't be fantastic for my body even if they taste good and improve my mood. Some of my favorites that I am thankful for in my sugar-free life:

  • Russell Stover dark chocolates
  • Bryers no-sugar added ice cream
  • Dutch Brothers sugar-free iced drinks like Snickers, Almond Joy, and Dutch Mocha
  • Sugar-free Jello pudding
  • Stevia powder, just made a Rhubarb Crisp and it was deliciously sugar free!
  • Sprite Zero
  • Diet Cherry Coke

Have I missed any sweet sugar free treats that you would recommend?

I am really loving this new American Apparel hooded pocket dress... even though I usually don't do hooded clothing (beside the classic hooded zip-up sweatshirt). I think this dress would be great worn alone or paired with shorts for Summer then layered with leggings or jeans for Fall!

Staying clean on the farm

I've heard there are some kids who don't love dirt. They cry "icky" and run looking for a Wet Nap at the mere sight of dirt. There are also mothers out there who can't handle their children getting dirty. A 2 year old munching on a dirt clod would probably send them into the psych ward. While those mothers have blessedly clean hand-me-down clothes from their pristine children, they would also not last on the farm.

From infancy, both the girls have loved playing in dirt. I could probably say that playing in dirt is a favorite past time. It used to sort of bother me, watching my baby crawl to the muddiest spot and plop down to dig tiny fingers into the grime....

Now I have come to terms with the reality and the laundry.

It is a blessed time of evening for me. I just put the girls in bed after bath #2 of the day. I usually don't bother with more than one bath, or a change of clothes, but they got into a fight and were throwing dirt at each other before lunch. Such sweet little princesses. It was too cold for the hose, so it was a bath or allow the grime to seep into more crevasses of my house. I am amazed at the dirt in the bottom of the tub!

Eek! What are they doing? Are they actually foraging for dirt?

Emma went in search for the perfect dirt clod to throw into the river. We were helping take the pump out of the river after irrigating last week. I road on the pipe trailer through the field and my phone bounced out of my pocket. We went on a long search for it and I was dreaming of a new iPhone, when we miraculously found my regular old Razor in the clover. It was singing, "She thinks my tractor's sexy.... it really turns her on... she's always smiling at me while I'm chugging along" as Jeff called my phone over and over again during the search. You have to love personalized ringtones. I have yet to find another one that is so perfect for my husband's calls. I'm even kinda crazy 'bout his farmer's tan.

The girls love nothing better than dirt, but a close second could be yelling into pipes. Maturity must take the glee out of the activity, because I don't see the allure. What I did see was some fantastic pipe to use depth of field on.

Yep, yelling into pipes and climbing on pipes is pretty fun.

Running through the field is also a good activity.

And riding on the tractor with daddy.

Just another load of laundry.... I mean, day in paradise.

Monday Inspiration

Two looks that caught my eye over the weekend...

Reasons I love these outfits: 1. I LOVE patterned socks! 2. I have been itching to get more tattoos!

A friend recently told me that she came up with the name for our son. She said she thought of it when she was nearly asleep one night and it was perfect: Ruger. I really love entertaining baby name ideas, although I am pretty sure that Ruger isn't quite what we have in mind for our son.

I love making birth announcements. It is a guilty pleasure these days -- sugar free and high protein (or so I tell myself). Another friend had a digital scrapbooking kit on her blog and I fell in love, so I bought it and designed a birth announcement for our little Ruger. This kit was only $1.99 and I can use the elements and papers over and over again. Digital scrapbooking is really fantastically fun; the best part being that I can do it without my children helping themselves to my craft supplies. Check out some inspiring digital papers and accessories at thedigichick.com

And now for Ruger's birth announcement:

I picked up a free font from dafont.com called, Jane Austin. I am a little smitten if you can't tell. :)

How I'd Wear It: Jessica from Heartthrobs & Villains

Happy Monday!

This week we will be finishing the "How I'd Wear It" series with a few more outfits from some ever-stylish bloggers... If you're just tuning in, I asked a handful of my favorite bloggers to put together an outfit they would wear featuring a pair of Knee Length Denim Shorts and describe where they were heading in said outfit... It's been really exciting to see how differently each person builds an outfit based around the same item...

So, first up this week is one of my new Portland neighbors, Jessica from Heartthrobs & Villains! I love that Jessica descibed her outfit as "a little bit snarky" as it was what she recently wore to a hungover vegan brunch - hehe!

Here's Jessica's outfit for Brunch With Friends (starring the Knee Length Denim Shorts):

JCrew Cardigan ($49.95), JCrew Tank ($16.50), Snoozer Loser Geode Amethyst Necklaces ($48), General Fiasco Tote ($16.50), Topshop Shorts ($55), Bensimon Laceups ($44.99), Weleda Lip Balm ($5). Read More.. Read More..

Here's Jen's outfit for A Lazy Sunday Spent Prepping The Nursery (starring the Knee Length Denim Shorts):

Steven Alan Gathered Shirt ($168), Nurseryworks Loom Crib ($750), AG Maternity Short ($175), Emma Pink Ingrid Sandal ($75), Urban Outfitters XO Studs ($12).

Happy Father's Day

Daddy's Little Girl Poem, unknown author

A little girl needs Daddy
For many, many things:
Like holding her high off the ground
Where the sunlight sings!
Like being the deep music
That tells her all is right
When she awakens frantic with
The terrors of the night.

Like being the great mountain
That rises in her heart
And shows her how she might get home
When all else falls apart.

Like giving her the love
That is her sea and air,
So diving deep or soaring high
She'll always find him there.

I'm so thankful for my children's father, who is also the love of my life. I appreciate his willingness to learn about and understand his children. I appreciate the joy he takes in entertaining them. My children will never have to wonder if they are loved because they hear it every day, feeling it in bear hugs too.

PS This poem made me tear up also as I thought of my dad, an amazing father who I love with all my heart for the sacrifices and love he gave and continues to give. I always felt loved, accepted, beautiful, and special in the eyes of my daddy. I am so blessed.

Project complete

I finished my desk project. You can read about it here and here. The desk was an antique white and looked dingy in my predominantly white kitchen. I painted it white, which felt like an exercise in futility at the time, but really looks much nicer now.

I had a curtain hanging behind the computer screen when it was on the counter/desk. It happened to be the right height to cover the screen on the new desk. I am not sure how practical it is for everyday use, but it does make the desk look a bit more country-cottage.

The desk was originally a vanity and it has a pop open lid compartment in the center with a mirror. It can't be opened with the computer on the desk, so there goes my hopes of applying my make-up in this spot every day.

I still have hopes that the old desk will magically turn into a window seat, but I am not pushing my luck with Mr. Fix-It.

Mr Fix It/my wonderful husband and I had some deep discussions about this desk. We just don't view form vs. function the same way. For me, something has to be lovely to look at, really preferable to the function. He doesn't care what it looks like as long as it is functional. Our disagreement was over the placement of the desk -- there is a light switch that lands right behind the left cubby on the desk's hutch. In my mind, the desk HAS to be centered on the wall or I won't sleep at night. He thinks, "just move the desk over against the window (and the other desk) so we can easily access the light switch." I believe we will have the same discussions over different things for years to come. Where do you stand, form vs. function, if you have to choose only one? Ideally, form and function work would go together, but it doesn't always work that way.

As you can see, I won this debate because me sleeping at night is essential to all of our happiness. We now have to reach through the cubby to turn on the light. It is barely inconvenient at all (so I say, others may disagree).
