I'm A Fan

Yep, there I said it, I'm a fan of overalls. And have you noticed this slightly-controversial style popping up around fashion shows lately? (That is, controversial in the way only a 1-piece made of denim could be)....

Now, don't let me steer you wrong here. I am not seeing this is an easy style to pull-off, nor a very democratic style.... To wear overalls and make them look fashionable and not dowdy - Hard work! AND I'll have you notice that they never show the overalls from behind... could get pretty dicey back there! Can't say I didn't warn you.

Gadgets and Gizmos

I love gadgets. Really, really love them. I once bought a broom that had an air freshener in it.

Freshen the air while you happily sweep. What could be better? The air freshener's power lasted about 14 minutes after I brought it home and, much to my chagrin, the broom still required my efforts to sweep the floor.

Product Image Libman Angle Broom

I also watch info-mercials. I feel like I need to say that to a support group. Don't judge me. Doesn't everyone succumb to a Saturday afternoon info-mercial every now and then? I love how whatever gadget is being advertised is displayed so magnificently. Forget the old way of doing sit-ups. Actually, don't even attempt the old way. Buy the _____ and you will look like a body builder in 3 minutes a day. No more PAINFUL exercise.

When we moved into this house, there was an Ab Roller PLUS in the basement, discarded by the previous renters. I was so excited. I had seen the info-mercial and was mesmerized. After discovering my new/used Ab Roller PLUS, I immediately got down on the floor to magically turn my abs into rippling, tanned, visions of toned perfection. I did one crunch with my hands strategically placed on the bar. I rolled up, felt the familiar discomfort of stomach exercise and said, "Well, this is stupid." The Ab Roller PLUS went into the trash.

I come by my addiction via the gene pool. My dad can't resist a good infomercial either. He bought the Magic Bullet. True to its promise, it acts like a blender and looks like a blender, but it is smaller and you can put the top part it in the microwave. Plus, it comes with those nifty rings so you can use the bullet top as a cup to serve mixed drinks to your friends at parties. I'm still waiting on the mixed drink, Pops.

I actually bought something from an infomercial too. It was Mari Winsor's pilates video. BUT WAIT, because I ordered within the alloted time period on the info-mercial, I also got a tension band to accelerate my workouts. Plus, the generous info-mercial people threw in a recipe guide to help me shed 10 inches in 10 days (or something like that). The little booklet should have been called, "You'll Be So Hungry, Your Stomach Will Actually Eat Itself."

Mari Winsor: Pilates

The workouts on the DVD are pretty fun, if you are into torturing your muscles. I do the exercises every now and again to assure myself that I still cannot lift my upper body and my lower body off the floor at the same time. That just seems unnatural.

After that purchase, Mr. Practicle, who I am married to, asked kindly that I clear all gadget and gizmo purchases with him first. He has talked me down from quite a few highs. "But this is the BEST product EVER." You know those highs. At the time, I am truly convinced that I NEED the product. My life will never be the same if I don't HAVE that product. I will not be able to open a jar, organize my closet, do a sit-up, pack a suitcase, straighten my hair, or wash my car. Those info-mercial people are good. After the high wears off and my husband has talked some sense into me, I realize that I can function just fine without the gizmo/gadget. Usually.

But every now and then, I convince him that we need a new gadget. My newest was not "As seen on TV." To my knowledge, no infomercials have been made about remote controls for camera. If there was one, it would be very entertaining. I wanted one of these for years. A remote control that snaps a picture.... you guessed it... remotely.
Canon RC 5 Camera remote control - Infrared
Sure the timer works. For decades, people have been setting the timer on their cameras, running to make the shot, fighting to look relaxed as they hyperventilate. But a remote is so much cooler. Like James Bond. Plus, it was pretty cheap. Stay tuned for plenty of pictures taken by remote.

There is another gadget that I think I need want. It is a fitness watch. It tracks speed, distance, calories, heart rate, shares info with other cool watch-wearing people, uploads data to the computer... and so much more.

Garmin 010-00658-12 Forerunner 405 with ANT+ Sport Wireless Technology (Green)

But it is $300. Three hundred. That would buy 7.14 boxes of diapers.

It is such a super cool watch. *Sigh*. I shared my gadget envy with my husband. He once again tried to talk me down from my high. I don't like his solution: a $2 stopwatch. His argument is that since I walk the same route every day, it would be easy to map out the course, determine the distance, and set time goals for myself... with a $2 stopwatch.

Imagine the info-mercial, if you will:

*Watch inept woman walking along, tripping and gasping for breath as she flails and fumbles with a huge, bulky stopwatch. *

Announcer says, "Tired of that big, bulky stopwatch that is so hard to manage while exercising? You need the Garmin Wireless Sport Watch. Loaded with training features, you can easily monitor your time, distance, pace, calories and heart rate on an easy to read, water resistant screen."

*Now watch a slim, sleek woman beautifully walking along. She delicately glances at her super cool fitness watch (perfectly sized for a woman's unique wrist) and smiles in blissful satisfaction. All the information she needs is indeed right at her fingertips... er... wrist.*

By the end of the scene, I would be convinced that the watch would do the work for me. In the meantime, I guess I will grudgingly admit that a $2 stopwatch WILL work. But if I look like I am tripping, gasping for breath, and fumbling while I walk, you'll know why.

What is your favorite gadget/gizmo? Please, please, please tell me I am not alone.

"Vacation"

Vacation \Va*ca"tion\, n. [F., fr. Latin, from vacatio, a being free from a duty, service. 1. leisure time away from work devoted to rest or pleasure.

We went to Eagle Crest in central Oregon for a few days this week. My family (parents and sister's family) like to get away for a trip together every year. Cancun didn't count because we were missing the lively little ones. The ones who need constant entertainment, don't sleep in, and need to go swimming 3 times per day even though they don't know how to swim.

Photobucket

Jeff and I and our children went ahead a day and stayed in a 2 bedroom condo on Sunday night. We played games, watched the cartoon network, went on walks, played on the play structures, and of course went swimming.

Photobucket

The constant sunshine in central Oregon is divine. Even when the temps are cold, the sun feels great. Remington enjoyed taking a back seat and my back enjoyed this position wearing the Beco. This carrier is far more comfortable than any I've used in the past, i.e. Bjorne or sling. It takes a bit of practice to put it on quickly, but I love the versatility of wearing the baby on the front or back. The baby is also very snug, so I can go about my life easily, almost like I don't have a 15 pound baby on my back.

Photobucket

These two watched something fascinating on the history chanel. I love these guys!

I've heard tales of husbands who aren't very helpful and leave the wife with all the work. For those women, I don't know how you survive. I am woman enough to admit I can't do it alone. I married a great man. I didn't know how great until we started having children. Jeff is in the trenches with me, playing, care taking, and occasionally shoveling out the crap.

He makes vacationing very enjoyable. "I've got this covered. Go enjoy the jacuzzi." Well, he had me at "jacuzzi." My heart is forever devoted to him.

Photobucket

I'm in love with this little dude too. He doesn't make my life easier. Actually, on the contrary, he makes it harder (especially on vacation). He started getting "snuffily" on Saturday and he turned into a snotty, congested, coughing, icky, mess by Sunday. He didn't sleep well, wanting to eat and snuggle all the live long day(s) and night(s). Even in my frustration, I found myself kissing his feverish head, saying "I love you," and "Oh, my poor baby, let me get up 14 times a night to nurse you." It's a strange thing about motherhood.

Photobucket

On Monday, we moved to a 3 bedroom, cute, little log cabin. Emma started to feel feverish and took a 2 hour nap -- first sign things were not right in the world. Mandy started sneezing and coughing and also had a fever later in the day. Mid afternoon we were joined by my parents who came from Washington (5 hour drive) and my sister's family from Salem (2.5 hour drive). The cousins always have so much fun playing together. It was instant fun when they arrived, but both girls lagged behind as their bodies battled whatever germ was attacking.

The nights were the hardest. Remington refused to be put down and wanted to be walked around. Forget sitting, or lounging and letting me get some sleep. He knew in all his 4 month old intelligence that I wouldn't make him cry because 1) he was sick and I felt sorry for him, and 2) the others in the house didn't want to hear him. He's a brainiac already. Mandy cried a lot too, so she was moved into our bed. Those were some miserable night time hours. It is beyond me how some find a "family bed" appealing. Angelina? Brad? Are you reading this? I would really like to know why you do it.

Photobucket

Amazing how perspective arrives with the sun. Good food, good laughs, more good food, a relaxing cabin with 195 cable channels, those are the times I choose to remember.

Photobucket

We usually get a family picture, but not this year. My sister was not feeling well either and gave me a bit of a death stare when I mentioned it. We decided to get one at Phil and Melanie's wedding in a month. Unfortunately, I didn't get any pictures of my parents! They were behind the scenes working hard, waking up at 5:30am with one child or another, telling entertaining stories, making good food, cleaning the kitchen, watching the children, and changing diapers. I love my family. Lots and lots.

I hope they remember that after they catch the nasty sickness we gave them.

a regular ol' update + some beautiful kid pictures

Photobucket

Emma spends hours crafting, creating, gluing, taping, and making beautiful things. Along with huge messes that she doesn't like to clean up (sounds like someone else I know... personally).

She is eager to tell you she is growing strong. Currently she wants to be as tall as daddy. Since she isn't ahead of the growth chart at all (in the 30th percentile), I imagine she won't make it to 6'2".

Emma is still very girly. The word "princess" is thrown around a lot, but we aren't watching Disney movies lately and that helps her attitude. Those princesses are not great examples of godly young women. She wears a skirt most days and tries to dress up her sister who could care less.

Speaking of attitude, I've seen a huge improvement. She has such a strong will and I constantly see her struggle. I explained the idea of a "sun beam" the other day after she asked about the song. Now she usually sighs and says, "I guess I need to be a sunbeam here." Or the other day after playing at her cousins (instead of resting), she said, "I wasn't a sunbeam at my cousins house. I was pretty naughty."

A sunbeam, a sunbeam, Jesus wants me for a sunbeam. A sunbeam, a sunbeam, and I'll be a sunbeam for Him.

I hope you have that song stuck in your head all day. I don't want to be alone.

Photobucket

Mandy's biggest loves are talking and hugging. Her ideal day would have her talking non-stop, being held by mom, reading books (while talking through them), and eatings suckers.

She tells me funny things all the live-long day. From the moment she wakes in the morning, we hear her sunny and sometimes whining chatter. At the grocery store the other day, we were getting out of the car and she asked, "Can I take my blanky into this business?" I am constantly amused by her.

We're working hard on potty training. She is out of diapers during the day, but has at least one accident a day. Usually because I forget to take her. She doesn't ever say she needs to go, but will go when I take her. Of course, she still needs heavy bribery. This is the slow way of potty training and hopefully she'll figure it out before she graduates college.

Photobucket

And now Remi who is 4 and a half months. He seems to develop and grow before our eyes. He is still very easy-going, putting up with all kinds of torture from the girls including pink hats being shoved on his head, baby doll thrust into his face, and stroller rides of terror.

He "needs" toys now -- no more laying on the floor contentedly. He cries if his toy falls out of his reach.

Rem-ster also can roll both ways. He's still pretty tentative and looks really freaked out when he flips over. I found him turned over in his crib yesterday and he wasn't very happy about it.

He sucks on his pointer finger. A little weird, but he is soothed. And yes, his hands are as gigantic as they appear in the picture.

This smily boy brings us so much joy, I'm not sure what we did without him. But I've said that about each of my children. They add dimension and God knew exactly what He was doing when He placed them in our family. I soak up their love every day. I'm so blessed.

Receiving Daffodils

Have you read this book? No? Neither have I. I really want to though. And that should count for something. I own and read the original "Love Languages" book and found it immensely helpful. The book talks about how people express and receive love. There are 5 categories: receiving gifts, physical touch, acts of service, quality time, and words of affirmation. Everyone has one or two that they naturally use to express love. You wouldn't believe the troubles that come up when a "gift receiver" marries an "acts of service" kind of guy. Here is a link: The Five Love Languages

I know for certain what my children's love languages are: Emma is a gift receiver/giver and Mandy needs lots and lots of physical touch. I want to see what the authors say about nurturing their individual needs, so I'll be reading the book soon. In the meantime, this is Emma's latest expression of love...

Photobucket

Spring is here early and the Daffodils started blooming last weekend. Every day since, rain or shine, Emma sneaks outside with a pair of scissors to cut flowers for me. Before she leaves, she comes up to me and motions that she want to whisper in my ear. Instead of pointing her mouth to my ear, she presses her ear against mine and says softly, "I need to do something outside. It's something special for you." I love the way she tells her secrets and I'm not about to correct her little-girl silliness. I watch from the window as she sneaks around the yard looking for freshly blooming Daffodils. Often Emma will return and hide the flowers until she's had a chance to make me a card. Presentation is everything with this girl. She hides her gifts behind her back and gets my full attention. I must close my eyes and then she give me her gifts. I "ooh" and "ahh" and say "thank you so much" and she says, "It's your Mother's Day." And my heart melts.

Vacation with friends...

Amanda and I had a nice visit. We didn't lounge around relaxing... there were four children involved in our festivities. Libby is 1 year old and toddled after the girls who are always on the go. There are a few essentials whenever a friend comes to visit:

  • Beach
  • Delicious coffee (I like to show off our somewhat local treasure, Dutch Brother's Coffee)
  • Authentic Mexican food (the closest Amanda comes to Mexican food in Saskachewan is Taco Bell)

Photobucket
(Ritner Creek Covered Bridge)

Amanda and I have been friends for 12 years since nearly the first day of our freshman year in college. We were standing in line waiting to audition for a worship band. Both of us came from small churches where we were on the worship teams and summoned up the courage to try out for a female alto part in the impromptu freshman band. It was quickly apparent that lots of other people were more confident in their talents. At least 50 girls stood outside the choir room. It was like American Idol except the small Canadian Bible College version. I remember seeing Amanda standing and looking just as terrified as I felt. We struck up a conversation and decided to leave center stage for the professionals (after, of course, we were passed up for the part in the band).

We lived just down the hall from each other, were in choir together, and shared everything that year including midnight microwaved nachos, lots of long talks, and a love for all neutral colored clothing. I had finally found someone who was just as passionate as I was about kaki pants and brown cardigan sweaters.  The next year we were roommates and I will be forever indebted to Amanda for moving with me to be an RA in a different dorm. We learned far too much about stinky couches, the power of Fabreeze, the Briercrest rule book, and ancient Greek.

Photobucket

We've seen each other every few years. Rather remarkable with 2,000 miles and 2 counties to cross:

September 2000 - Amanda and Linds' wedding

March 2002 - our wedding and Amanda and her parents and Brad came for the event

August 2002 - Jeff and I made a rare (and last) trip in the middle of harvest to Banff to visit Amanda's family

August 2004 - Amanda and Linds came to visit while I was miserably pregnant with Emma

January 2006 - Jeff, me, and 1 year old Emma flew from Vancouver BC to Saskachewan

May 2007 - Amanda Linds and their son, Liam, made a road trip to the NW to visit us

November 2008 - We made a road trip with 4 year old Emma and 1 year old Mandy to visit them when Amanda was a few days shy of her due date with her second baby

February 2010 - Amanda and Libby flew to see us

Photobucket

I think our children will be terrific friends too. We missed 4 year old Liam who undoubtably would have come away with plenty of girly attention. The girls loved having Libby around to play with.

Photobucket
Libby was so fun to meet. And we made her take lots of the girls' clothes. The coat and hat she is wearing were Emma's when she was tiny. Sigh. So precious.

Until we meet again....
